1st Thess. 5:5 – “Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness”.
As children of God, we carry the light of God in us and should influence the world around us by bringing them Hope in the midst of chaos.
One of my favourite Sunday school songs growing up was ‘This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine’. The words of that song are relevant regardless of your age, your past and your pain. We are holding a light and we are to let it shine!
God wants to use the pain we’ve been through to help others. He wants our light to shine before men, that they may see His working power, His healing in us, and give Him all the glory.
There are people in our communities grieving from the loss of a loved one, a job, relationships, and even good health. We can be a light to other people going through hurts by:
- Sharing our past hurts, our weaknesses and pain. This will encourage them to know they are not alone. Most people will open up to someone they can connect with.
- Sharing the good news of Christ; the love of God, the comfort, peace and joy that we have experienced in the midst of our trials. Simply sharing our story honestly can make a difference and give others hope. We can trust that God will give us the right words to say.
- Empathizing and sympathizing with those hurting… 1st 5:11
Personally, I have found that in giving to others, I have been blessed myself. In reaching out to others who need support, I have had a great sense of relief just by being able to talk about my own struggles and my pain, I also feel somewhat fulfilled that perhaps I have made a little difference in someone’s world.
You may feel that you’re not quite ready to help others, however sometimes all that you simply need to do is show up and listen. We all grieve differently and go through various stages of grief; you will know when the time is right to speak up.
