Light in the darkness

In my book ‘Letters of Hope’, I mentioned in Chapter 9 how I used to dread night time following my mum’s death. This was when my problems or burdens seemed bigger than they really were. I’d lay down and start thinking all sorts of negative things. More often than not, when I eventually fell asleep, the result would be nightmares.

Darkness can mean different things to various people depending on their circumstances. It can signify any or all of the following:

  • Danger
  • Loneliness
  • Being lost or being in a state of confusion
  • Oppression
  • Fear of dying or of the unknown

Darkness often breeds fear, which in turn breeds anxiety and worry – all of which are negative feelings and do not encourage one to be hopeful.

God is the true light we need on our path and in Him there is no darkness (John 1:5). He gives light to everyone, absolutely no one is excluded!

He is able to:

  • Guide us through whatever darkness we may be facing and lead us towards safety.
  • Deliver us and set us free from bondage.
  • Reveal all things to us
  • Grant us everlasting peace that surpasses our understanding

The Word of God is a lamp unto our feet and light unto our path (Psalm 119:105), if we choose to spend time in the Word – reading, studying and meditating. When we choose to walk according to God’s word, we won’t stumble in the dark, we won’t be oppressed by whatever comes our way, we will be empowered to walk confidently. His word will give us the strength and wisdom we need for our current situation and hope for the future.

God’s love for us is just as real in the dark as it is in light. We simply need to embrace His love, lean on Him and trust Him at ALL times, regardless of our circumstances.

Trials and Tribulations will come (disappointment, loss, grief, sickness) BUT we can live as those who have hope, we can be of good cheer because Christ has overcome the world and deprived it of its power to harm us (John 16:33)

God is indeed our ever-present help in times of trouble!

Our way-maker, miracle-worker, light in the darkness!
